For those who couldn't make it to Sunday night's meeting, here are the major points to note:
Until further notice, our meetings will be in the Banksia Room in the middle section upstairs at the Tura Beach Country Club. A microphone will be used at future meetings.
Shawn Keane from Shawn Keane Photography (visit his website) gave an informative talk about taking better portraits. He covered many aspects including choosing a background, composition, lighting and getting to know your subject. Several examples of Shawn's work were passed around, including two photo books and several portraits printed on material such as aluminium sheeting and acrylic board.
Joe Fitzpatrick gave a demonstration of our new Flickr site. If you haven't done so yet, respond to his invitation to give you access, or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if you haven't received an invitation yet. This will enable members to share their photos within the group, and also ask questions and seek advice on taking better pictures. For future meetings, members will have the option of uploading their photos to the Flickr site instead of bringing along a thumb drive.
Several members took the opportunity to share a selection of their photos from the outing to Fishpen. Some who didn't make it to the outing showed the group other photos they'd taken which represented something uniquely 'Australian'. Denis Whitford gave a brief but very interesting demonstration on cropping photos, using examples of his own work.
Don't forget that the Bega Valley Shire Council Photo Competition closes 20 January.
The Arts Law Centre of Australia has produced a document outlining the law on Street Photographers' Rights i.e. taking photos of people, landmarks and outdoor art installations. In addition to the law, there is also a wealth of information on the internet about the etiquette of taking photos of people in public places and it's well worth taking the time to read the advice professionals have to offer.
In brief, many give three basic 'rules'. Briefly, these are: always get permission, respect people's wishes (do not try to sneak a photo if someone says 'no') and, if someone asks you to stop taking their photo, stop. More details are on the club website.
For more information about the "Up Close" Photography Competition which runs until 26 February, as well as the ABC Open photography courses on offer at Bermagui and Eden libraries, visit the abcopen website.
It was agreed that this be at The Boardwalk. We'll meet at 7:30pm at the boat hire end of The Boardwalk on Sunday, 5 February (weather permitting).
